Philanthropy: present and future scenarios

On December 13th in Trieste, at the historic Caffè San Marco, the presentation of the book “Philanthropy” by Paola Pierri was held. The evening was an opportunity to explore the theme of philanthropy in its many geographical, cultural and historical facets and diversities, outlining, at the same time, current scenarios and future prospects for growth in Italy and in the rest of the globe.

Philanthropy: present and future scenariosThe volume contains a detailed analysis of philanthropy in the Italian panorama made up of many historical and current examples of men and entrepreneurs moved by the desire to support others.

Paola Pierri, a high-profile economist with extensive experience in the banking world and still engaged in both the profit and non-profit world, thanks to her activity as phylanthropy advisor, thus confronted herself in an open dialogue together with Emma Ursich, Secretary General of The Human Safety Net of the Generali Foundation, an insurance group that has marked the historical, economic and identity development of the city of Trieste.

And there is much historical in the figure of the modern philanthropist who draws his origins in the Catholic roots of our country; Paola Pierri deliberately cited the greatness of the patrons who played so much part in the creation of the beauty of our cities in the Italian Renaissance, putting their wealth at the service of artists to develop their talents and thus honor the greatness of their financiers.

In Italy these figures have a reserved, shy, discreet soul in their way of acting, for example for the support of their employees – such as Marzotto, Zegna – and they are profoundly distinguished from Anglo-Saxon contexts (Rockerfeller, Carnegie, and today Gates, Zuckerberg or Buffet to name the most famous) where the idea and culture of communicating one’s gestures of generosity is most in force.

This different approach also leads to a very different disbursement structure: in Italy there is a lack of large numbers such as those of American donations and if they have a very high level of structuring and professionalism it is due to a different socio-economic approach that is expressed. with clear transparency and with underlying fiscal and welfare reasons.

It is clear that in our country we enjoy health coverage that does not exist in the United States and which therefore also leads to a re-evaluation of the related social benefits for us, not to mention the historical tax advantage that all those who donate money to social causes have there. philanthropic.
